The recent opening of the Sunset Links interchange in Tucson, Arizona, marks a significant milestone in the region's infrastructure development. This project, funded by Pima County and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), has transformed the northwest Tucson area, improving traffic flow and safety along Interstate 10. The $171 million investment has resulted in a more efficient and safer transportation network, benefiting both residents and commuters.
One of the key features of this project is the addition of a fourth lane in both directions along Interstate 10, addressing congestion and enhancing safety. The reconstruction of the Orange Grove Road interchange, completed in February 2025, further contributes to smoother traffic movement. Additionally, the $35 million Sunset Road extension, funded by Pima County, has created a seamless connection to and from I-10, with bridges over the Union Pacific railroad tracks and the Rillito River.
The project's scope was extensive, involving the replacement of all nine bridges in the area, including spans over Canada del Oro Wash and the Rillito River. The reconstructed Orange Grove Road interchange now features higher I-10 bridges, providing greater clearance and improved safety. Both interchanges now have additional lanes on entrance and exit ramps, ensuring a more efficient and safer driving experience.
Furthermore, the project included the construction of an access path to the Chuck Huckelberry Loop from Sunset Road, along with improvements in lighting, landscaping, and drainage. These enhancements not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area but also contribute to a more comfortable and safe environment for residents and visitors.
The I-10 project is part of a larger roadway improvement plan managed by the Pima Association of Governments, as part of the Regional Transportation Authority. The work began in early 2023, and while the interchange is now open, drivers may still encounter some lane closures as crews finish art installation details. This attention to detail showcases the commitment to creating a well-rounded and aesthetically pleasing environment.
In my opinion, this project exemplifies the importance of investing in infrastructure to enhance the quality of life for residents and improve the efficiency of transportation networks. The Sunset Links interchange is a testament to the positive impact of such initiatives, not only in terms of safety and traffic flow but also in creating a more attractive and livable environment for the community.
